About the Major
Build a rigorous foundation in statistics, computing, and AI methods to wrangle, analyze, visualize, and communicate complex data—from genomes to economic indicators—turning it into insight that drives discovery and informs decisions, all grounded in responsible governance, ethical leadership, and collaboration across interdisciplinary teams.
Why Study Data Science
Nearly every field now runs on data, health systems mine patient records, companies model customer behavior, governments run predictive analytics, and newsrooms chase data-driven stories. The B.S. in Data Science trains students to build the pipelines and models behind that insight, and to communicate it clearly enough to change decisions, mirroring what happened with computer science a generation ago, as software reshaped every industry. Vanderbilt's Data Science minor has already grown to roughly 700 students — one in ten undergraduates — and the B.S. offers a rigorous path deeper into one of the fastest-growing fields in the country.
