About

Dan Arena is an Associate Professor of the Practice of Computer Science at Vanderbilt University and Director of CCC-TEACH (Teaching Excellence Among Colleagues in Higher Education), an initiative focused on faculty mentoring, collaboration, and excellence in teaching across the College of Connected Computing. With more than 30 years of experience in higher education, his primary interests include computer science education, effective pedagogy, faculty mentoring, and the use of emerging technologies to enhance teaching and learning.
Since joining Vanderbilt in 2016, Arena has taught and coordinated several of the department’s core undergraduate courses, including Programming and Problem Solving, Discrete Structures, and Algorithms. He has led major course redesigns, developed new instructional materials and assignments, and championed the adoption of zyBooks, now widely used throughout Vanderbilt’s core computer science curriculum. He has also contributed to the development of Vanderbilt’s new BA in Computer Science and Generative AI Minor. Arena received the Vanderbilt School of Engineering Excellence in Teaching Award in 2018 and the Innovations in Teaching Award in 2021.
Arena’s interest in the intersection of technology, education, and generative AI has also led to public-facing work, including his Slate article “ChatGPT vs. My Algorithms Class,” an appearance on NPR’s Up First discussing AI and higher education, and invited talks and podcasts on AI, education, and technology.
Trivia: Outside academia, Arena has a long history in the music industry. He and his wife, Sara, worked as professional songwriters in Nashville, and together they co-founded SongU.com, an online songwriting education platform that has served more than 10,000 songwriters worldwide. He also wrote several original songs for the Broadway musical Urban Cowboy, earning an Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical and a Tony Award nomination for Best Original Score.
