About

Jie Ying’s work focuses on developing technology to improve tools in the operating room, such as transforming surgical robots from teleoperated tools to intelligent assistants and providing augmented-reality guidance for cancer surgery. As a part of this endeavor, Jie Ying improved the stability of an open-source surgical robotics platform, the da Vinci Research Kit, and laid out the framework for the next generation of that system. She’s also interested in modeling the interaction between surgeons and tissue so that we can better understand the environment surgeons are operating in. Some of the application areas have been skill assessment for kidney stone surgery and 3D reconstruction from endoscope images.

Research Focus

3D reconstruction, augmented reality, machine learning, computer vision, deformation modeling, sensor fusion, surgical skill assessment, surgical gesture modeling, robotics, automation
