Three Things That Set This Program Apart

The Mod System

Take courses in short, intensive seven-week terms. Go deep on one set of skills at a time, then choose two electives to tailor the degree to your goals.

The Capstone

Meet your industry partner project before your first class. Build it throughout the program and present it to industry stakeholders in May.

How the capstone works

Career Support

MS in Data Science students work with the Owen Graduate School Career Management Center from admission through graduation. Get one on one coaching, resume reviews, employer connections and workshops.

The Curriculum

Build your foundation across three core sequences: Computation, Data Analysis, and Practice. Master deep learning and generative AI, then specialize with two electives.

Orientation in August. Launch and level-set. Capstone phase: teams and topics are assigned.

Start together, start prepared. You begin the first project tasks with your team, and skill-refresh courses in programming and probability get everyone to the same starting line; a summer assessment lets you opt out if you are already there.

Courses

  • DS 5210 Intro to Programming (1 credit)
  • DS 5110 Intro to Probability and Statistics (1 credit)
  • Capstone project assignments, bootcamp and orientation

Mod 0 courses can be waived by summer assessment. They do not add to tuition.

Who This Program Is For

The MS in Data Science is built for students coming from computer science, math, statistics, economics or the sciences. Show us your readiness in math, programming, and problem solving, and if you need a stronger foundation, our bootcamps will get you there.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I need a computer science degree to apply?

No. We welcome applicants from every quantitative background. You need a four-year bachelor's degree and evidence of programming skills, which can come from coursework, online study or professional experience. Bootcamps before Mod 1 cover programming, calculus, linear algebra and statistics for those who need them.

  • Can I start in the spring?

No. The program admits one cohort each fall, and the mods build on each other from August to May.

  • What is Mod 0, and can I skip it?

Mod 0 is the August launch: capstone teams are assigned and two one-credit refresher courses in programming and probability get everyone ready for Mod 1. A summer assessment lets you waive them. Either way, Mod 0 does not add to your tuition.

  • Can I bring my own capstone project?

Occasionally, yes. If you already have a relationship with a company, contact the program between early June and mid July, before you start, and the project needs early approval. Most projects come from our industry partners.

  • Are assistantships available?

The program does not offer graduate assistantships with admission. Merit scholarships are the main form of support, decided at admission. Part-time work is available through Student Employment.

  • Can an internship count for credit?

Yes. A supervised internship or a research practicum can fulfill elective credit with approval. Have a question we did not answer? Request information and we will get back to you.
